My sister Allison gave me the best Christmas present I ever got.
But it wasn't the glass frame and photo above. (Though that's up there.) She accepted me as her sister! I could bawl. In fact, I did once in an IM conversation a month or so ago when she called me "sis."
The holiday trip home, although I didn't get to see anyone I wanted outside the family, went even better than I expected. Nobody even seemed nervous or freaked out-- even Mom-- and my name and pronouns were respected minus a couple slips.
Except for a nasty off-on toothache, it was perhaps the best week of my life. Connie says it was for her too.
That's me with the present wrappings Connie put all over me.
I had a really nice "vacation", and my mother is a lot less unsure about this whole thing now. As she admitted to Connie after she asked, now that I look and sound a lot more feminine than I had in person before I flew away in '05 for jail, she has a much easier time accepting and respecting my true gender.
Now she's even starting to work with me directly on the name/pronoun issue. She avoided it entirely during the trip (except a short discussion), but that's perfectly okay.
Her stress level seems to have improved drastically, and I'm relieved for that too!
As for the toothache, it doesn't hurt too badly anymore thanks to meds (mmm, haha) but I still need to get it crowned or yanked out. =/
Hooray for having an understanding family! I'm very glad to hear that your sister is so welcoming, that simply rocks. Hopefully this will give you a boost for whenever you start to feel down about things.
Fingers crossed that you can sort out the tooth situation with minimal fuss!
